Following the film screening presentation and introduction talk by the contributors in Kinematic Kyoto I, this session is dedicated to a hands-on workshop in architecture filmmaking. Aimed at scholars, creative practitioners, community activists, students in higher education in particular architecture students, members of the public with an interest in community engagement, this workshop invites participants to reflect on the ways in which cultural density is layered, made temporally distinct and enacted spatially. Employing film as a critical media for documentation and communication, the contributors will share how this can be rendered tangible in imaginative ways through moving images.
In this session, we will introduce participants on the workflow and practicalities of filmmaking with a spatial focus on the built environment – from conceptualization, planning, storyboarding, shooting, in-camera and montage editing, to publishing. Using the workshop venue in Kampung Plampitan and the neighbourhood as the backdrop and textual material for the filmmaking exercise, we encourage participants to think about what will form their narrative focus and content, and consequently, how the dynamic moving camera can be applied to emphasise the aesthetics, emotional and functional aspects of the space they want to convey to their audience. Visual continuity or disruptions, meanwhile, directly shape dramatic expression and narrative structure.
Working towards a short but impactful 1-minute film showcasing either the character of a place, a personal story or to highlight a critical issues, at the end of the workshop we invite participants to post their completed original work as an ICAS13 festival output on an official media channel, to be shared online with the wider community.
