Paper Abstract: This article discusses Ming literati members' embracement of Catholicism and Western learning through an analysis of prefaces and postscripts they composed for Jesuit publications before 1615. It explores how the missionaries, particularly Matteo Ricci, influenced the Ming literati, and how the literati identified the solid nature of Catholic values. The article reveals a range of attitudes held by the Ming literati toward embracing Western learning and Christianity before 1615. In summary, it suggests that being Confucian Chinese and Christian was entirely possible during the late Ming period.
