The Effect of Providing Balanced Nutritional Education Using “Cakram Gizi” Media on Knowledge and Behavior Fruit and Vegetable Consumption Among Adolescents in High School

Paper Abstract: Consumption of fruits and vegetables is part of the balanced nutrition guidelines, which is the main source of fiber. Fiber plays a role in bowel function and can reduce cholesterol, blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of obesity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of providing balanced nutrition education using cakram gizi media on knowledge and behavior of fruit and vegetable consumption in adolescents. This research was a quasi-experimental research with pretest-posttest control group design. The research sample amounted to 65 high school students in class X who were selected using simple random sampling. Data analysis in this study used Independent T-test. The intervention was conducted at SMA Negeri 7 Surabaya using cakram gizi media and SMA Negeri 19 Surabaya using leaflets. Data collection included filling out questionnaires on the characteristics of respondents and parents, knowledge questionnaires, and Semi Quantitative-Food Frequency Questionnaires (SQ-FFQ). The results showed that there was an effect of providing balanced nutrition education using cakram gizi media on knowledge (p=0.045), but there was no effect of providing balanced nutrition education using cakram gizi media on the frequency of fruit consumption (p=0.433), frequency of vegetable consumption (p=0.192), total fruit consumption (p=0.684), total vegetable consumption (p=0.072), and fiber intake (p=0.316). So, nutrition education using cakram gizi can improve knowledge. It is recommended to conduct nutrition education on an ongoing basis and increase the fruit and vegetable menu in the school canteen.
