Is India turning into dictatorship?
Wednesday, July 31, 2024
14:00 – 15:45 (GMT+7)
Paper Abstract: This paper is part of my seminal work on the relations between Italian fascism and Indian radical, in particular Hindu, nationalism. Starting from a short introduction to the early contacts between the RSS, the Hindu Mahasabha, and the fascist regime and the increase of the Sangh Pairivar in the 1990s, the paper will focus on present increasing fascistic character of the Sangh Parivar. I will compare the Hindutva techniques to nurture political hate and anti-Muslim policies and legislation with the racist and anti-Jewish laws introduced by fascism. The paper will examine in particular the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a law aiming at reducing Muslims' citizenship rights, like Italian and German race laws reduced or denied the citizenship right of German Jews. Furthermore, I will examine the signals of authoritarian involution in Indian politics, with particular reference to the recent 'One Nation one Election' (ONOE) reform that will undermine India's democratic institutions and the electoral system and wipe-out the political oppositions. If up to the present the only safeguard for Indian democracy were its institutions, their dismantlement might pave the way to authoritarianism, if not dictatorship. The causes of the crisis of Indian democracy will be the main interpretative framework of this paper.
