Tatorbhengan Tradition in Torbang Village of Sumenep District And Revitalization Effort

Local culture plays a role in building the identity of a nation because it is the foundation that unites different cultural elements so that in the end they form a national culture. Without awareness and knowledge of the importance of local culture, globalization can erode local culture until it disappears, as happened with the Tatorbhengan tradition. The writer uses qualitative method in order to discuss about the practice and meaning of Tatorbhengan tradition, the background of its disappearance, and the strategy that are brought from the revitalization of the tradition in order to conserve it. Therefore, the author has found that the meaning of Tatorbhengan practice is related to its name, offerings, and also people relations. The revitalization to bring the tradition back from the impact of globalization and for the tradition to be conserved is carried up within the commodification spearheaded by the district government in Sumenep.
