Paper Abstract: For decades, museums in India have been quiet spaces that were mostly visited by specialists, tourists and organized groups of Indian schoolchildren. The typology of museums has also remained unchanged for a long time: state and municipal (mainly created during the British Colony), as well as museums supported by private and public foundations and trusts.
But suddenly everything changed: - Old museums began to "come to life", - New museums began to open and new forms of museum existence began to develop, - Making museums and having museums has become prestigious for both the creators and all stakeholders and owners, - There was a demand for "new" museum professions and expertise, and ass a result, educational institutions began to develop new specialized courses and programs, - "New" forms of museum communications with public began to develop, - "New" collaborative projects with cultural institutions of South and South-East Asia rise.
In this presentation, which is a part of our ongoing research, we will look at these and related aspects of the modern history of museum studies and museum practices in India on numerous cultural case studies.
