6. Using the Arts, Media and Culture: Contestations and Collaborations
Optimizing Indonesia's tourism sector is aimed at poverty alleviation, environmental preservation, resource conservation, cultural enrichment, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Adopting sustainable tourism practices is essential to sustain the growth of the tourism sector. Sustainable tourism involves a long-term approach that safeguards various facets of tourism, including the environment, society, culture, and economy, benefiting current and future generations of local communities and visiting tourists.
Bali, as a prominent tourism destination in Indonesia, can significantly enhance the well-being of its residents through the tourism sector. However, sustainable tourism development in Bali requires careful consideration to ensure its continued success and sustainability in the future. Several challenges have emerged due to tourism development, such as rising pollution levels, increased waste, and high greenhouse gas emissions.
Numerous initiatives have been undertaken to mitigate the adverse impacts of tourism, including promoting green tourism in Bali. Green tourism entails eco-friendly tourism activities and services. Environmental responsible tourism is being introduced in Bali through campaigns organized directly and via social media platforms, targeting the local Balinese population and tourists.
This research illustrates how green tourism campaigns in Bali can serve as a strategic approach by community-driven to implementing sustainable tourism on the island. The introduction of green tourism through social media campaigns is one of the strategies for implementing sustainable tourism that engages both the Balinese population and tourists. Involving the Balinese community in tourism development through these campaigns is a means to collectively protect the culture and environment, ultimately contributing to sustainable tourism development.
