Honoring Tradition Embracing Modernity in Adia Puja's Mustika Zakar Celeng

Paper Abstract: the aim of this study is to see how tradition and modernity live in society as reflected in the literary work entitled Mustika Zakar Celeng by Adia Puja. Modernity originated from the West starting from the Enlightenment period and gained momentum in the eraof the industrial revolution and the abandonment of traditional patterns. Meanwhile, Indonesian modernity is still much younger. Indonesia will need different variables but overlap with pots-tradition discourse in the West. This paper attempts to examine how the values of tradition, myth and modernity are understood by society. in this article, tradition and modernization are balanced. the theory used in this research is theory which is related to the aspects of tradition and modernity, characters and characterization. this research is written descriptively, the approach used is sociology of literature. The main data were taken from Adia Puja's Mustika zakar Celeng. In addition, this study uses qualitative methods in terms of close reading techniques in scrutinizing popular novel written by writer  of Indonesia fiction. the data are in the form of words, phrases, sentences, expressions and quotations contained in this novel. the Analysis showed that the novel also elaborates on mystical riches, legends, fairy tales as well as traditions that are rooted in rural communities. They believe in many mystical things, although like Haursepuh, Tabor village has been invaded by modernity and Islamization
