Protest is a universal right that encompasses people of all ages, including children. This event aims to bring together children, youth, and adults at Tambakbayan kampung to engage with the Indonesian version, currently in progress, of the book "EU PROTESTO!" by Laura Erber and Frederico Ravioli, translated by Adrian Perkasa. First published in Brazil, this book was created to stimulate discussions with children, educators, and families about the various forms and styes of protest.
From individual expressions of dissent in private spaces to collective protests in the streets, the book gracefully underscores the importance of instilling the notion of self-determination in children, enabling them to become critically engaged members of society.
"I PROTEST!" draws inspiration from the impactful protests led by high school students across Brazil in 2015, where they occupied their schools and transformed them by taking care of the buildings. The book propose an interpretation of protest as an inherently human expression. It seeks to provide children with a destigmatized view of the art of protest, highlighting that we've been expressing our dissent since birth, with crying as our earliest form of protest.
The book will be published by the Dis-Print Kult collective. The event combines the book presentation with a workshop. Participants will share personal stories, recounting childhood memories of involvement in protests. Following there will be a workshop specially designed for children and young people, focusing on creating posters and composing protest songs. We will provide art supplies and craft instruments.
