[Workshop] Asian YouTubers: Content Creators Developing Cultural and Historical Knowledge

Activity or Workshop Details: This workshop brings together YouTube content creators whose work presents and develops knowledge about historical and cultural themes in Southeast Asia. The content creators aim to share their experiences both in terms of the production and perspectives of the short-form videos they produce for their YouTube channels. Production values include issues of scripting and visualizing their art as well as the background research they bring to their work. Workshop participants will discuss a range of technical issues - such as copyright, creation of original art, and forms of bricolage that go into social media production. We will also discuss forms of productive collaboration between content creators and more traditional scholars. The creators featured in this workshop imbue their videos with local perspectives and local values aimed at engaging Southeast Asian audiences. They are actively involved in locally-focused but globally relevant practices of decolonizing social-historical knowledge and making historical narratives relevant to contemporary audiences. In this respect as well, these content creators will engage with the wider ICAS community around ways that the global scholarly community can make its work more relevant to local communities.
