Presentation Abstract The ocean is becoming an increasingly noisy environment. With a rise in commercial shipping, resource extraction activities, and military-related activities, the underwater ocean environment is a virtual cacophony of noise. The introduction of noise into the marine environment may have significant impacts on marine species and ecosystems. This article will examine how the existing international legal framework can be used to address this issue. Using normative legal research, this article will provide background information on noise pollution in the marine environment, the relevant global and regional instruments dealing with noise pollution to protect the marine environment, conservation of marine species and ecosystems.
