Tuesday, July 30, 2024
09:00 – 10:45 (GMT+7)
Presentation Abstract The urban population across Asia is projected to increase continuously over the next years, reaching an estimated 3.48 billion by 2050, according to UN-Habitat. Rapid urbanization has functioned as a key motor of Asia’s economic development, but the accompanying risks have been severe. As a result, recent studies on Asia’s cities have tended to focus on the challenges facing communities residing in urban landscapes. Using the results of the 'Social Values Survey in Asian Cities' jointly carried out in 2022 by Seoul National University Asia Center and Korea Research, this presentation examines whether the common challenges faced by the urban communities of Asia’s 14 major cities have also contributed to the sharing of certain values that may provide the basis for common ‘Asian’ initiatives to mitigate the risks of urbanization in the future.
