Session Name: Mega-Asia: Establishing Asia Itself as the Unit of Analysis
1 - Asia's World Heritage-scape: Components, Perspectives and Data
Tuesday, July 30, 2024
09:00 – 10:45 (GMT+7)
Presentation Abstract Since 1979, Asian countries have proactively registered their heritage as World Heritage. As of 2023, 267 registered sites form Asia’s World Heritage-scape. It is statistically evident that individual Asian countries and Asia as a whole have been and remain invested in adding to the current World Heritage List. Recognizing that the terms and concepts of ‘Asia,’ ‘heritage,’ and ‘World Heritage’ all fundamentally derive from the West and that Western perspectives and standards have played a significant role in the formation of the current database, this study explores the key components, perspectives and data of Asia’s current World Heritage-scape to underpin characteristics of Asia and its heritage and also to question whether there is anything uniquely about the heritage-scape of Asia.
