4. Seeing from the Neighbourhood: States, Communities and Human Mobility
There exists a dynamic relationship between rural transformation and in-situ urbanization on the island of Java, Indonesia. As a densely populated island, Java has significantly changed its rural-urban landscape over the past few decades. This study explores the factors and implications of rural transformation to in-situ urbanization, where rural areas gradually evolve into urban spaces locally while retaining their community social values.
This presentation promotes a discussion of the factors of rural transformation in Java and the appearance of in-situ urbanization. The report investigates the factors that propel the transformation related to rural economic diversification and development, changes in rural land use, infrastructure development, and rural-urban relationships while considering the role of policy interventions and regional governance. Additionally, this study examines the cultural and social dimensions of in-situ urbanization, assessing how communities adapt to urban influences while retaining the values of their pre-existing rural society.
The research findings highlight the challenges and opportunities arising from in-situ urbanization for the development of rural areas. By uncovering the complex interactions between urban and rural forces on the island of Java, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the broader processes of rural transformation and in-situ urbanization in a rapidly changing rural area. This underscores the need for context-specific policies encompassing and leveraging the unique characteristics of in-situ urbanization to promote inclusive and rural sustainable development.
