4. Seeing from the Neighbourhood: States, Communities and Human Mobility
In the past few decades, rural areas in the Global South have undergone significant transformations, including coastal rural regions. The rural transformation in coastal areas is characterized by economic, social, and environmental changes, encompassing economic diversification, alterations in the physical environmental conditions, and the development of social and cultural aspects. Local cultural values and rural transformations significantly influence the characteristics of coastal rural areas in Indonesia, particularly in Java. Jatirogo Village is one of the villages along the northern coast of Demak Regency that exhibits strong influences of Islamic values and local culture.
This paper discusses the results of profiling the transformation in coastal villages within the spatial, economic, and socio-cultural contexts. The transformation of Jatirogo Village is explored through an analysis of economic diversification, demographic changes, and environmental aspects over ten years. Furthermore, this presentation delves deeper into the influence of local cultural and religious values in the village transformation process.
The research has found that rural transformation in the region occurs through diversifying economic activities in coastal areas. Coastal environmental degradation drives changes in livelihoods and residents' locations, which are influenced by strong local traditional values and religious beliefs, altering the livelihoods and activities of the village. Positive community collaboration values may support tourism sites, particularly those aimed at rural development. This study provides valuable insights into the role of cultural and religious values in the rural transformation process in coastal areas of Indonesia.
