Session Name: Global Borneo: transnational actors and the global politics of resource governance in Borneo
2 - Governing sustainable palm oil supply in Kalimantan: an interactive governance approach
Tuesday, July 30, 2024
11:15 – 13:00 (GMT+7)
Presentation Abstract Kalimantan has been at the center of the debate on the controversial role of oil palm. The region has witnessed rapid economic growth and significant environmental degradation in relation to the expansion of the palm oil sector. Over the last decade, a growing number of initiatives have developed to reduce the negative environmental impacts of palm oil while trying to maintain the positive economic impacts. This period has been marked by the emergence of subnational public regulations, the stronger presence of private regulation, and the rise of self-regulatory frameworks in the form of corporate zero deforestation commitments. The presentation aims to elaborate existing regulatory frameworks that operate in the palm oil sector in the island, and how actors and regulatory framework interact to govern the sustainability of palm oil sector on the island. Emphasis will be placed on the types of interactions inventorized by Eric Lambin and others ('Effectiveness and synergies of policy instruments for land use governments in tropical regions', in Global Environmental Change 28, 2014): complementarities, antagonisms, and disconnects.
