10. Healing Bodies: Medicine, Well-being, Sport
Billions of children worldwide participate in sports, with many being identified as talented. However, only a small number of these individuals achieve elite athlete status. Talent identification and development are becoming more important in sports performance. Finding, recruiting, and retaining talent is a global challenge. In fact, original research on this topic has confirmed that talent development programs should carefully consider their selection strategies, as it can significantly affect their success. This Research Topic has successfully compiled applied research that presents the latest evidence on the use of technologies for measuring and analyzing talent globally. Other methodological advances have utilized non-linear approaches and emphasized the importance of socio-cultural determinants in complex and multidimensional environments. Gaining a deeper understanding of talent identification and development requires understanding the interplay between nature and nurture. However, there is a lack of consensus in defining talent, leading to varying perspectives among practitioners, coaches, scouts, sports scientists, athletes, and members of the scientific community. Despite growing evidence of key factors that impact talent identification and development, many coaches and stakeholders still neglect to adequately consider important physiological factors, such as relative age, growth, maturation, and training age. This paper will emphasize the importance of these factors and the necessity to accurately differentiate between them.
