Presentation Abstract Those from urban areas, regions with university graduation ratios and university capacity ratios, have an advantage in university, while those from rural areas, which lack educational resources and educational opportunities, remain at a disadvantage in university. Many stratification studies in Japan have focused on stratification in status attainment and educational attainment. It has also been shown that the higher education of those from rural areas in urban areas has a consequent effect on status attainment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine which individuals are affected by residential mobility while adding the aspect of regional disparity in status attainment in the beginning career of university-educated individuals. The data from the Social Stratification and Mobility (SSM) survey includes information on the place of origin and the place of residence at the time of higher education. Residential mobility is divided into schooling mobility associated with university and employment mobility. And the effects on beginning career attainment are examined by age group through multiple regression analysis. The results show that residential mobility to urban areas has a direct effect on educational attainment for the younger cohort and no direct effect on beginning career. This is consistent with previous existing findings. Residential mobility from rural areas to urban areas for schooling and employment in rural areas showed a decreasing trend with age, and the effect on beginning career attainment observed for the older cohort was not found for the younger cohort.
