7. Multiple Ontologies: Religiosities, Philosophies, Languages and Society
This research paper delves into the complex interplay between Tantra, the Bauls, and modernity within the contemporary socio-cultural landscape. Tantra, a mystical and esoteric tradition rooted in South Asian spirituality, and the Bauls, a syncretic sect of wandering minstrels in Bengal, have both endured for centuries, adapting to changing times. This study explores how these ancient traditions have responded to the challenges and opportunities presented by modernity. Through a combination of qualitative research methods, including ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and textual analysis, this study seeks to uncover the multifaceted dynamics at play. It examines the role of contemporary gurus, practitioners, and artists in shaping the discourse around Tantra and Baul practices, shedding light on how these traditions continue to evolve and resonate with modern sensibilities.
By offering insights into the intersection of tradition and modernity, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the enduring relevance and adaptability of Tantra and Baul traditions. It also highlights the ways in which these traditions engage with and contribute to broader discussions on spirituality, identity, and cultural heritage in the contemporary world. Ultimately, this socio-cultural analysis enriches our knowledge of how ancient wisdom traditions navigate the challenges and opportunities of the modern era, fostering a dialogue between tradition and progress.
