Poster Abstract: The aim of this poster is to consider the history of Japanese language education for foreigners in modern Japan. In particular, we will clarify the influence of American missionaries of Japanese language education. American missionaries influenced the way Japanese language education was conducted before an after World War 2. After the war, the first department of Japanese language education was established at International Christian University in Japan. We will analyze how this department was established and the characteristics of Japanese language education sought by the American missionaries.
