6. Using the Arts, Media and Culture: Contestations and Collaborations
From its historical journey, Indonesia has layers of life under colonial rule. Colonial architecture as a colonial legacy in Indonesia can still be seen and tells of its function as part of exploitation efforts; hence, it became a barrier to be used today. The Kavallerie-Artillerie Building in the Mangkunegaran Palace faces difficulty being developed because of its history. The building was part of the Javanese royal military organization, which had ties to colonial powers, namely Het Legioen van Mangkoenegaran. As an organization, the legion and its barrack, which is the Kavallerie-Artillerie Building, were part of the crossways of knowledge between Java and Europe. The research results presented in this poster focus on the architecture of the Kavallerie-Artillerie Building, which is interpreted and understood from the perspective of urban heritage identity for city development. The current condition of the building, which is a slum settlement, needs attention for the social matter, and then every aspect can go into synergy. This was achieved through open museum design as a tool for cultural sustainability guard, which uses the adaptive reuse method and empowers communities. The results show that the continuity of tangible and intangible historical and heritage properties and assets can be used as urban development capitals, hence supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
