The panel discusses how Indonesian social media users utilize this new kind of media for various purposes because the autonomy it offers. In the age of social media, everyone has the potential to act as a consumer, distributor, and producer of information. Social media has blurred subject positions of actors. Although digital media landscape was created as a continuation of preexisting social and political structures (Tapsell, 2019), to some extent it triggers new cultural ideas and patterns as well as new variety of identities among the social media users. The panel gathers scholars from various disciplines and institutions to discuss some of recent trends on the autonomy of Indonesian social media in interacting with new technology and other users. Some questions the panel would like to address are: how do we study social media construction of cultural identity? What do social media users, especially new generations, do this new technology? What forms of interaction are facilitated by social media? What culture and identity are newly formed, modified, and maintained from such interactions? What efforts do these users take to mitigate the side effects of social media?
