At present, digital transformation of the economy and society is widely discussed even though it is not a completely new phenomenon and we have already experienced digital disruption in the past. The digital transformation of the society, economy and companies started with the emergence of the Internet as a new digital medium and communication channel. The development of Internet-based technology is driving changes to the information society. The characteristics include: digital, convergence, manipulable, networkable, demassification. The development of digital technology has had an impact on the economic sector, such as changes or adaptations in running business, banking transactions, thereby changing business systems to online (World Economy Forum). Disruption that may occur in the economic sector is the shift of customers to other industries or markets, for example large companies will shift to start-up companies. The pattern of social relations is currently experiencing a shift from physical interaction (face-to-face) to interaction based on new social media. The main characteristics of new media according to Roger (1986 in Karman 2014) are interactivity, de-massification and asynchronous. Interactivity is the ability of new media communication systems to facilitate individuals communicating almost like a face-to-face conversation.
The development of the times occurs in line with the development of internet technology. Quarterman and Mitchell (1994) divide the uses of the internet into four categories, namely the internet as the first communication medium; second data exchange media using email, newsgroups, FTP, and www; third media seeking data information; and the fourth community function, the internet forms a new society consisting of internet users from all over the world. The positive impact provided by the internet is easy access to information through digital platforms which has an effect on increasing insight and knowledge regarding information, communication media, job search media, and transaction media.
These technologies offer new opportunities, but also disrupt the media and communications industries in new ways. For example, software agents based on artificial intelligence can produce content automatically and are changing the role of journalists, big data and its analysis is a new source of stories and data journalism. In similar ways the same technologies are also changing communication markets. At the ICAS 13 conference, we want to explore opportunities and risks in digital transformation of media and communication, such as transfer knowledge, how audiences respond to digital transformation, and also the explanation about platforms that utilize digital transformation.
