“Ways of Seeing & Knowing: Approaches to understanding painting authenticity and attribution in Indonesia” seeks to elucidate modalities for knowledge production and transmission and that are employed when artwork authenticity is called into doubt, or a counterfeit painting is detected. The cross-cultural methodology adopted in this study acknowledges the embedded knowledge hierarchies, socially situated knowledge systems, communities and cultures that contribute to this research. Such an approach enables a nuanced exploration of knowledge representation, verification, and the societal implications of painting forgery in Indonesian arts communities. Painting forgery in Indonesia is an active and ongoing issue within the global art world, and current understanding and knowledge is continually evolving as new evidence is brought to light.
