The year 2024 will mark the 20th anniversary of the Aceh – Sumatra Indian Ocean tsunami, locally known as smong. The tsunami damaged nearly 75% of the city of Banda Aceh. It is estimated that at least 167,000 of Aceh’s 5 million population died. The coastal urban areas were devastated and much of the infrastructure was destroyed. Today, however, Banda Aceh has a population of around 265,000 and is experiencing significant economic growth. Aceh overall has not experienced the social breakdown, looting, and conflict that is quite common in post-disaster zones, let alone after such a mega disaster like the 2004 tsunami, and in fact, the existing conflict was resolved peacefully on August 15, 2005, about a year after the tsunami. This panel explores how Aceh experienced the natural disaster of the tsunami, the gross human rights violations that occurred during the civil war and the independence movement in Aceh, and the compound and cascading natural and social disasters of the coronavirus and climate crisis, and how Acehnese society has demonstrated resilience. The papers in this panel will shed light on the above question from both conceptual and empirical perspectives. For this purpose, the presentations in this panel adopt the concept of "slow disasters," which seeks to understand disasters not as single events but as long-term, cumulative processes, and at the victim and human scale, not just systemic approaches. Moreover, this panel will introduce and examine a case study of East Java (2014 Mt. Kelud Eruptions) to understand the findings and lessons from the wider context.
