Mingran is an economic and environmental historian of modern China. He is currently a PhD student at Institute of Area Studies, Leiden University. His research interests center on political economy, science and technology, and global capitalism. His current project focuses on cotton plantation projects in coastal Jiangsu, 1895-1950.
Prior to his study at Leiden, he completed his BA in International Affairs and Political Science at the George Washington University and the London School of Economics, and obtained his MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History. Alongside his academic experiences, he had previously worked in think tanks and non-governmental organizations in China and the US.
