Gerald W. Fry (Ph.D. Stanford University, M.P.A., Princeton) is a distinguished international professor at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, he was at the University of Oregon for 19 years, where he was a professor of political science and international studies and directed both the International Studies Program and the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. In 1991–92, he was a Pew Fellow in International Affairs at the Kennedy School, Harvard University. In May 2011, he received an honorary doctorate from Rajanagarindra Rajabhat University in Thailand.
His publications include many diverse books such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Thailand and Its Neighbors: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, Pacific Basin and Oceania, Education in Thailand, and Happiness Education. He has published numerous articles on education and development in Thailand.
He is starting his seventh decade of work on Thailand and has lived there for more than 10 years. In Thailand, he has worked for diverse organizations such as the Peace Corps, the Ford Foundation, the Asia Foundation, and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, He has also taught at numerous Thai universities.
