Liaw Pey Wen is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore. Her research investigates the monarchy’s utilization of modern digital media to uphold legitimacy and power and its survival and adaptability tactics as a hybrid representation of tradition and modernity in changing global circumstances. She received her MA from the College of Communication, National Chengchi University in Taiwan (2008). Her master’s thesis won the “Overseas Chinese affairs studies postgraduate thesis award”. She is a member of Freedom Film Network; and her documentary “Lot, Umah Am” about the aborigines, Orang Seletar won the Justin Louis Award (2011). She is one of the authors in Singaporean Model and Civil Sphere (Prometheus Enterprise, 2020), The Future of Malaysian Education (Mentor Publishing, 2020), The Age of Pandemic: Feature Reporting on Covid-19 (Business Weekly Publications, 2020). Her research interests include political communication, social psychology, media representation, cultural identity, and journalism. A journalist and writer for over a decade, her writings appeared at Malaysiakini, Zaobao, The Reporter, The News Lens, Contemporary Review, among others. For her professional experience, she possesses ten years of journalism experience , and covers socio-cultural, education, politics, social movement, and environmental topics in Malaysia.
