Ashok Das is an associate professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Previously, he taught in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, San Francisco State University. He received his Ph.D. in Urban Planning from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and trained as a planner and architect at Kansas State University, and the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. His research explores institutional challenges to and innovations in ameliorating urban poverty through the provision of services in the Global South, especially in Southeast and South Asia. Community participation and empowerment, urban informality, slum upgrading, decentralization and governance, and the role of civil society in fostering inclusive urbanization are his key interests. He has explored community-managed integrated microfinance, disaster risk reduction, pro-poor shelter approaches, planning education, and the platform economy’s impacts on socioeconomic mobility. He jointly edited two book—New Urban Agenda in Asia Pacific, and Informal Services in Asian Cities. He is co-chair of the Global Planning Education Committee (GPEC) of the Association of the Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), and has contributed advice and/or research to the Asian Development Bank, the Ford Foundation, the World Resources Institute, and UN-Habitat.
