Akbar Adhi Satrio is a PhD student at the School of Design at RMIT. His expertise in designing, making, researching and teaching Indonesian craft has led him to his current research, which seeks to investigate the role of form creation within Indonesian craft design and making practices as a local cultural identity.
In 2010, Adhi began his career as a Junior Designer at Jenggala Keramik in Bali. While working there, he collaborated on several hotel projects with the design team and even designed his line of products, the Makare-Kare tea set. He then moved to Toki, Gifu, Japan, in 2013 to work as a studio assistant for Ryota Aoki Pottery, where he gained experience in Japanese pottery studio workflow for producing tableware and art objects. Adhi subsequently joined the Faculty of Art and Design at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) as an assistant and part-time lecturer at Telkom University before he became a full-time lecturer at ITB in 2016.
Adhi actively participated in several research and community development programs in West Java and several other regions of Indonesia. His focus was mainly on ceramic craft design development and trend forecasting in craft.
