Dr. Zhang's research has focused on the political use of history in China and the evolving historiography of modern China. In particular, he has been investigating the origins of a surprising phenomenon known as 'Republican fever' (minguo re) - the widespread positive reassessment of the pre-communist Republican era (1911-1949) in mainland China during the post-Mao period. Dr. Zhang holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford. Prior to academia, he worked as a BBC journalist for over a decade, reporting on Chinese political developments and analysing Chinese media content.
