Liliana Morais holds a B.A. in Archaeology and History from the University of Lisbon, an M.A. in Japanese Culture from the University of São Paulo, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Tokyo Metropolitan University. She is currently a Specially Appointed Associate Professor at the College of Sociology at Rikkyo University and an Adjunct Lecturer in Art History at the Kanazawa College of Art and Temple University Japan Campus. In 2012, she curated the exhibition "Do Japão ao Brasil: a Viagem da Cerâmica Oriental" at Caixa Cultural Salvador, and in 2016, she published the book "Cerâmica em Cunha: 40 Anos de Forno Noborigama no Brasil". She has published articles in various journals in her field, such as “Spicing Up a 150-Year-Old Porcelain Factory: Art, Localism and Transnationalism in Arita's Happy Lucky Kiln” (Japanese Journal of Sociology, 2020). Her research explores craft and identity through the lens of mobility, transnational migration, transcultural exchanges, and more recently, rural revitalization, focusing on Japan from a global perspective based on qualitative research methods such as ethnographic fieldwork, life-story research, and interviews. She is a contributing writer for Garland Magazine and a Knowledge House for Craft board member.
