Hui Yan Chew is a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Language of Aichi Shukutoku University. She was awarded her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Humanities, Nagoya University, Japan, where she has studied Sinophone Malaysian films since 2000. She is particularly interested in Malaysia’s sociohistorical and political aspects and uses Sinophone studies as her theoretical framework, and in conjunction with diaspora studies, accented cinema and identity politics, as featured in her doctoral dissertation. She has published papers such as ‘Debating “Chineseness” and “national identity” in the Sinophone Malaysian films The Journey (2014) and Ola Bola (2016) in the East Asian Journal of Popular Culture (https://doi.org/10.1386/eapc_00062_1).
