Monika Arnez is Associate Professor for Asian Anthropology in the Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University. Her interdisciplinary work lies at the intersection of Social and Cultural Anthropology and Indonesian and Malay Studies. She participated in three international European Commission funded projects, „Sinophone Borderlands,“ „Competing Regional Integrations in Southeast Asia“ (CRISEA) and „Integration in Southeast Asia: Trajecto-ries of Inclusion, Dynamics of Exclusion" (SEATIDE). Her case study for CRISEA on the social and ecological impacts of land reclamation was referred to as a „signature success of CRISEA`s dissemination effort“ in the final report. She was awarded her PhD from the University of Cologne in 2002. Her work on gender and Islam includes the following publications: “Dakwah by the pen” (2009), published in Indonesia and the Malay World, “Sexuality, morality, and the female role: observations on recent Indonesian women’s literature” in Études Asiatiques, together with Ningrum Dewojati (2010) and “Dimensions of Morality: The transnational Writers’ Collective (2016), published in Bijdragen tot de Taal- Land- en Volkenkunde, together with Eva Nisa. Her most recent article is “Ethnic politics and ambivalent imaginaries of the future at the Melaka Straits,” published by the Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography in 2023.
