Independent Researcher, Ireland
Thea Mercer completed a master’s of anthropology at University College Cork (2023) in Ireland. She received a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Arts, completed Master of Fine Arts in Arts Leadership courses: Grant Writing, Marketing and the Arts, and Applied Research Seminar with a published case study titled 4Culture, and achieved Magna Cum Laude from Seattle University in the United States. During her scholarship, she relocated to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and conducted ethnographic studies on rural-urban migration in support of a vulnerable community and produced a short film. Thea earned certificates in data visualization from Berkeley Advanced Media Institute and editing from University of Washington. A foundation in the visual arts has informed her transdisciplinary approach as a researcher, editor, and botanical illustrator. To date, her botanical art has been exhibited in the United States and she is a member of The Association of British Botanical Artists (ABA). Research for her dissertation was conducted in Burren National Park, as an artist in residence at Burren College of Art, County Clare, Ireland. She is interested in investigating landscapes, waterways, and patterns of migration. Using visual design methods, she seeks to illustrate the impact and interaction between individuals and the natural world.
