Joshua Tan is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His dissertation, titled “Schooling Free Asia: Diasporic Chinese and Educational Activism in the Transpacific Cold War," is an exploration of how American Cold War agendas and diasporic Chinese efforts to support higher education, gave rise to a range of educational projects in the early Cold War. His broader research interests include the histories of Cold War Asia, Chinese migration and diaspora, and international education.
