Dewi Meyrasyawati is a lecturer at the English Department, Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga. She specifically focuses on Cultural Studies discipline, though she also works transdisciplinarily with teaching and literature. She obtained her PhD from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where her dissertation talked about hijab practices of Muslim women in Surabaya. Her dissertation grew from her research interests which revolved around fashion and its connection with gender, religion, and multicultural contexts. Her work background in Surabaya inspires her focus in discussing the cultural significance of hijab in a multifaceted and multicultural Surabaya. Other than hijab, she also investigates other local Javanese fashion expressions that are culturally and semiotically significant.
