The panel explores interlinear translation as practiced in the Indonesian-Malay world broadly between the fourteenth and twenty first centuries. Translations placed between the lines of the original text are found in many manuscripts from the region, where they tend to take the form of diagonal or horizontal fragments of text 'hanging' under the line, occasionally appearing over the line or overflowing to the marginal spaces. Rooted in the manuscript culture of the Indonesian-Malay world, interlinear translation has also entered into the region’s print and even performing arts, engaging in not only written but also oral transmission of knowledge. The panel discusses the interlinear space, be it physical or imagined, as a field used for the transfer of meaning, teaching and learning, interpreting and rewriting. These processes, in which meaning can be lost and regained, occur not only between languages but also cultures, resulting in expected and unexpected encounters, omissions, and reinventions.
The papers constituting the panel present case studies of bilingual manuscripts from Java and Sumatra, as well as of a performative practice from Bali. They address interlinear translations from Arabic to Javanese and Malay, from Old Javanese to Modern Javanese, and from Sanskrit to Indonesian. Looking into linguistic, social, and cultural dimensions of these translations, the papers attempt providing insights into the entanglements between translation and such fields as religious conversion, pedagogy, language teaching and learning, moral instruction, gender notions and behaviors, worldview and everyday life, art and ritual.
