Presentation Abstract The idea that Europe had the duty to collect, preserve, and study plants, animals, and objects for the good of humanity was contemporary of colonial expansion. It shaped the way institutions (zoos, museums, botanic gardens) were conceived but also what were transmission and conservation and how to classify, index, and study objects to preserve. Exhaustivity was essential. All this had been called into question. Not only studies have shown that other forms of custody and transmission exist, but also practices of care that integrate creative loss and transformation. In this contribution, I will present some of these practices.
