Forrest Zhang received his PhD in Sociology from Yale University. He has been teaching at Singapore Management University since 2005. His research focuses on agrarian political economy, social stratification, and rural development. His work has been widely published in leading international journals such as the Journal of Peasant Studies, Agriculture and Human Values, World Development, Politics & Society, and the Journal of Agrarian Change. He is the recipient of the 2015 Bernstein and Byres Prize. He currently also serves as editor of the Journal of Agrarian Change.
