Studied anthropology at Tokyo University as well as the Australian National University.

Got M. A. at Tokyo University in 1978. Got Ph. D. at Research School of Pacific Studies, the Australian Natinal University in 1990.

Doing fieldwork in Indonesia since 1979.

Taught anthropology at Kyoto University (1984 to 1989), Osaka International University (1989 to 1997) and Osaka University (1997 to 2018).

Retired Osaka University in 2018.
