Ilhong Ko is an archaeologist researching migration and exchange in the Korean Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. She has published research papers on topics such as ancient maritime trade routes, ancient sea ports, and migration in antiquity. Since 2019, she has expanded her area of interest, undertaking research into ‘Bronze Age-Early Iron Age Exchange Networks in the East Asian World’ and ‘The History of Exchange around the East Sea Rim’. This, which aims to understand the nature of regional networks that formed the Asian world, includes consideration of how links and relationships among regional networks reproduced the ‘Asian world’. She also has a continuing interest in archaeological material from North Korea, since migration and cultural exchange within the ancient East Asian world cannot be fully understood without that data. As a collaborating researcher within the Institute of Humanities at Seoul National University, she also utilizes cutting-edge technologies in the digital humanities to investigate the research history of Balhae within North Korea.
